Fault Reactivation Risk Associated with Subsurface Fluid Injection in Sedimentary Basins

Abstract

Subsurface fluid injection can reactivate pre-existing faults and induce seismicity, posing a persistent challenge for subsurface energy operations. We couple geomechanical modelling with in-situ basin stress observations to evaluate fault-reactivation potential across a range of injection scenarios. The analysis identifies critically stressed fault orientations and proposes operational pressure thresholds that substantially reduce modelled seismic risk.
