Abstract

Thawing permafrost represents one of the largest and least constrained feedbacks in the global carbon cycle. We combine controlled incubation experiments with in-situ flux measurements along a natural thaw gradient to partition carbon release between carbon dioxide and methane. Our results indicate that landscape moisture, rather than temperature alone, exerts dominant control over the climatic impact of mobilised permafrost carbon, with direct implications for Earth-system model projections.
