Abstract

Reconstructing the natural range of monsoon variability is essential for contextualising contemporary rainfall trends. We present a precisely uranium-thorium-dated stalagmite oxygen-isotope record resolving monsoon intensity over the past eleven thousand years. The record documents recurrent centennial-scale weakening of monsoon rainfall coincident with North Atlantic cooling episodes, while spectral analysis reveals a persistent solar influence on monsoon strength. These results provide a robust baseline against which recent hydroclimatic variability can be evaluated.
