Abstract

Compound hot and dry extremes are intensifying under climate change, yet their combined influence on urban thermal environments remains poorly characterised. Drawing on a dense municipal sensor network and atmospheric reanalysis, we show that nighttime urban heat-island intensity nearly doubles when heatwaves coincide with pronounced soil-moisture deficits. We examine the implications of this amplification for heat early-warning systems and for the strategic siting of urban green infrastructure.
